Controlling THMs discharged with wastewater treatment plant effluent is necessary to protect surface water quality. Chlorination is a popular approach for disinfecting treated wastewater prior to discharge. However, the reaction of free chlorine with organic compounds present in wastewater leads to the formation of harmful disinfection by-products, including THMs. Regulatory limits have been put into place to minimize the levels of THMs present in wastewater effluent discharged to surface waters.

Online monitors or offline analyzers can be used in wastewater treatment applications to obtain real-time data on disinfection by-products; ensuring regulatory compliance and serving to protect the environment from these harmful carcinogens.
