Aqua Metrology Systems: Putting Climate at the Heart of Water Treatment
Unsustainable approaches to water treatment are pervasive, partly due to a lack of real-time data. H2O Global News caught up with Rick Bacon, CEO of Aqua Metrology Systems, to discover how a potent combination of accurate insights and eco-friendly treatment methods can help build an industry fit for the future.

Monitoring Real-time Ammonia/Ammonium Levels in Brine in the Chlor-alkali Industry
The online Instran™ analyzer is integral to maintaining safety in the chlor-alkali process. Instran™ is effective at measuring ammonia and ammonium in brines above 80 g/L; it ensures plant optimization by allowing real-time and accurate monitoring, despite the difficulties presented by a high concentration of NaCl in the sample.
View ResourceSafeGuard™ H2O Arsenic Removal Demonstration at California American Water’s Isleton Water System
In this episode of AMS Talks, Rick Bacon, CEO of AMS, speaks with Joshua Webster, water treatment operator for California American Water about the demonstration of SafeGuard™ H2O arsenic removal technology at the Isleton Water System. The demonstration at Isleton showed the effectiveness of SafeGuard™ H2O to mitigate total arsenic contamination in drinking water below 10 ppb, and its ability to deliver an affordable and reliable fully automated treatment process that does not require the use of bulk chemicals like conventional treatment approaches (e.g., coagulation/filtration).
View ResourceMetalGuard™
MetalGuard™ is the first fully automated online trace metals analyzer for monitoring municipal and industrial water and wastewater. The system provides real-time, multi-stream analysis for a range of trace metal contaminants.
MetalGuard delivers accurate and reliable results (up to 1 ppb or ± 15%, whichever is higher) with a typical measurement time of fewer than 30 minutes. The system also allows for manually collected samples to be analyzed.
MetalGuard™ Lead Alert!™
A novel automated and unattended real-time lead corrosion risk management system for monitoring the risk of exposure to lead contamination.
The analyzer provides rapid analysis of the safety of drinking water in homes, schools, day-cares exposed to the risk of lead contamination. It is designed to be used independently or in conjunction with SafeGuard™ Lead for rapid low-cost analysis of locations predicted to be at risk for an increase in contamination risk.
AMS at AWWA ACE22
AMS CEO Rick Bacon invites water utilities and industry professionals to join AMS at the AWWA ACE22, scheduled June 12-15, 2022 in San Antonio Texas. AMS will showcase its innovative SafeGuard™ H2O in-situ reagent generation water treatment solution at the Innovation Hub, booth #22079. This unique treatment approach offers facilities an affordable, non-hazardous and environmentally sustainable solution to remove inorganic and trace metal contaminants.
View ResourceControl and Management of THMs in Drinking Water
THM levels in a water treatment system can change rapidly and are highly influenced by changes in raw quality and water age. Without real-time and high-density actual and predictive data on THMs across their networks, water treatment systems face the risks of under-treating their water or incurring substantial costs as a result of over-treatment. When integrated into a disinfection byproduct (DPB) control strategy, the AMS online THM analyzers (THM-100™, THM-100™ FP, THM-RR™) serve as an essential solution to facilitate regulatory compliance with THM standards.

British Petroleum (BP) replaced one of its existing Tytronics online fluoride analyzers at the Castellón refinery in Spain with the online Instran™ Fluoride analyzer. Monitoring fluoride levels in real-time with a reliable and accurate online water quality analyzer is integral to maintaining safety of the alkylation zone and overall refinery. Since its installation in January 2022, the Instran analyzer has been operating continuously and has met the facility’s needs to monitor fluoride levels in real-time within the alkylation zone.

SafeGuard™ H2O is an innovative arsenic treatment approach that generates a ferrous ion reagent in-situ via an electrolytic process to address arsenic contamination effectively and economically. The demonstration of SafeGuard™ H2O at California American Water’s Isleton Water System proved the effectiveness of the technology to mitigate total arsenic contamination in drinking water below 10 ppb, and its ability to deliver an affordable and reliable fully automated treatment process that does not require the use of bulk chemicals like conventional treatment approaches.
View ResourceIsleton, Calif. SafeGuard™ H2O Arsenic Treatment System Demonstration Report
California American Water’s Isleton Water System underwent an evaluation of SafeGuard™ H2O, an intelligent arsenic remediation system manufactured by AMS. This innovative technology generates a ferrous ion reagent in-situ via an electrolytic process to address arsenic contamination. The objective of the project was to demonstrate the ability of the electrogenerated ferrous reagent produced on demand by the SafeGuard™ H2O system to remove arsenic from unchlorinated well water reliably and effectively. The SafeGuard™ H2O system consistently treated arsenic below 10 ppb and the technology’s modular design can be easily integrated with the facility’s existing coagulation/filtration system; replacing the use of liquid ferric chloride and providing the facility with operational and capital savings.
